Energy Efficient Boiler Installation

When you take a look at the numbers, installing a new energy efficient boiler that reduces gas consumption by 20% results in annual savings of approximately 5-10 cents per square foot. Available in two efficiency ranging from around 80% for standard conventional boilers, and energy efficient condensing units that land over 90%, combine that with the efficiency level of your current boiler which tends to drop over time as with many systems and devices. The older your system or the less maintenance you’ve had performed translates into a greater efficiency difference yielded by a new system. A boiler’s ability to withstand condensing flue gases is the deciding factor on how each unit stacks up between these to two efficiency ranges. The condensing of flue gases as occurs in high-efficiency boilers, requires special design considerations so the system will be able to tolerate the corrosive effects of the condensate.

Boiler efficiency has long been measured by the amount by which the heating value of the fuel is being converted into actually useful heat. Condensing boilers are more efficient due to their ability to absorb a greater amount of heat from combustion gases such as propane, natural gas, or fuel oil. Burning such fuels produces water vapor that then condenses, allowing the system to provide a considerable increase in it’s own heat efficiency.

Alternatively, most conventional boilers are non-condensing and utilize materials that are incapable of properly tolerating the corrosive properties that are a side effect of condensing flue or stack gases. Conventional boilers operate at around 80% efficiency, compared to over 90% efficiency achieved by more efficient boilers that utilize the condensing method. There are of course, other factors that can also influence boiler efficiency, including boiler shell losses, piping losses, and cycling losses.

About Fire Tube & Water Tube Boilers

All boilers utilize water in some manner to absorb the heat that the unit creates by burning a mixture of fuel and oxygen. With “Fire Tube”, and “Water Tube” boilers being the two primary types in use, both are capable of producing either steam, or hot water to heat your home. Fire tube boilers are typically made up of a series of straight tubes housed within an outer shell that is filled with water. As the heated gas circulates through the tubes, it in turn heats the surrounding water.

Water tube boilers on the other hand, are designed to circulate hot combustion gases throughout the exterior of a large number of water-filled tubes in basically a system that conversely mirrors the fire tube method. Modern day boilers feature tubes that utilize a complex arrangement of bends and fins in an effort to maximize the heat transfer area. Due to the greater than average amount of pressure from the water or steam confined within the tubes, water tube boilers can be produced more easily and in larger capacities than their fire tube counterparts. Water tube boilers are generally preferred when higher-pressure steam applications are needed or desired.
