Lake in the Hills (LITH) was once considered a sleepy lakeside village, located in McHenry County, and has a current population of approximately 30,000 residents. At the time it was one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Chicago and the country. And its popularity continued throughout the 1990s as developers and the populations flocked to the area.

In 1923 the village was started by a Federal Judge named Walter J. La Buy, near Woods Creek Lake. By the time 1926 rolled around, he had purchased 472 acres (now known as Indian Trail) where he built five stucco homes that remain to this day, but only one of them remains in its original state.

It was formed as the Lake in the Hills village in 1952, and it was a favorite among vacationers from the Chicago area who preferred spending time away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Many of them loved the area so much that they became year-round residents.
