Sump Pump Installation and Repair Barrington
Protecting Your Home From Flooding
An important part of almost every plumbing system in Barrington homes is the sump pump. Most people don't notice it as long as it's working properly. But if it stops working or breaks down, water damage can happen fast and cause serious problems for your home. At Advantage Plumbing, we take storm water removal very seriously. We carefully research all the pumps we offer and have been installing sump pump systems for years with consistently great results. Our team uses the latest backup systems that can even call your home, send you a text, or email you if something isn't working right. If your sump pump is old or you're unsure if it's enough to protect your basement and belongings, give us a call for a full check of your home's storm water system.
What Is a Sump Pump?
A sump pump is a submersible pump placed at the bottom of a sump pit, usually installed at the lowest point in your basement or crawl space to work best. Groundwater around your home's foundation is directed into a perimeter drain system located at the base of the foundation. Water moves through small holes in the drainpipes and collects in the sump pit. When the water level rises too high, a float switch turns on the sump pump, which then pumps the water away from your home to a nearby storm drain, dry well, or retention pond. Most modern homes have a sump pump already, but some older houses might need one installed to help prevent basement flooding.
Sump Pump Installation
Sump pumps can be hard-wired into a home's electrical system or easily plugged into an available outlet. The majority of sump pumps are equipped with a battery backup to ensure that the pump will continue protecting your home in case of a power outage, which most commonly occur during times of precipitation or severe storms when it's especially important that water is pumped away from your home.
If you experience a power outage at your home that lasts longer than a couple minutes, if you experience frequent power outages, or if your primary sump pump fails, a battery backup sump pump or one of many water powered backup systems (that use your home's water supply pressure to remove water from the sump pit) can help to protect your basement and home from water damage. Contact an Advantage Plumbing expert today to find out what options might be best to ensure your home stays safe and dry.
Sump Pump Maintenance
You should be testing your sump pump regularly to ensure that it is operating normally when the next big downpour hits your Barrington neighborhood. You can easily test your system by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. As long as everything is functioning normally, the pump should turn on almost immediately and begin ejecting the water from your system. You can verify that everything is working properly by checking that the float and valve are able to move freely and not being blocked by anything.
You can also increase the efficiency of your system by cleaning your sump pit. Remove any dirt, sand, gravel or other debris that may have built up over time to prolong the life of your system and allow it to be as effective as possible. Ensure that the discharge line opening is free of obstructions so that water can be pumped through the line and out of your basement or crawlspace. If you aren't sure how to do this yourself or prefer not to worry about the hassle, our team of experts is always happy to come out and perform and needed maintenance to your sump pump system.
Sump Pump Replacement & Repair
Sump pumps, like any equipment with moving parts, will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. How often this happens depends on the weather and how much rain falls, so there's no set timeline for replacement. If your sump pump stops working, give us a call at Advantage Plumbing. We'll come out to check it for you, and while we're there, we'll also look for any basement leaks caused by a broken sump pump. We'll then recommend any repairs you might need to keep your home safe and dry.
